Star Wars: Battlefront 2 gamers angry over character ‘paywall’ in £70 game
ANGRY gamers are lining up for refunds after getting their hands on the hotly anticipated game Star Wars: Battlefront 2.
Players said they were "disgusted" to find that they couldn't play as their favourite characters unless they forked out more in "microtransactions" to EA Games.
The £69.99 title will launch in the UK on Friday but you can get 10 hours of multiplayer modes and the first three singleplayer levels ahead of then through subscription service Origin Access.
Origin Access costs £3.99 a month or £19.99 for the entire year.
Many will be used to clocking up several hours of gameplay or handing over cash to unlock characters like Obi Wan or Anakin.
But fans sitting down to the latest Star Wars title were shocked to find that they couldn't even play Darth Vader or the Emperor without forking out.
To access Vader, players needed to spend around 40 hours earning him or pay to use him.
Based on playing three hours a day that could still take 16 days to access a character previously taken for granted on the franchise.
The dissatisfaction with the game within hours of the preview launch was clear and appears to have led to a flood of cancellations.
One with a customer service support assistant who "knows what's up" after cutting ties with the game.
An EA Games spokesperson wrote on Reddit that characters like Darth Vader were locked to "provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes".
Fuming, customers took to forum Reddit to complain, with several describing EA Games as "greedy".
Another added: "Enough with microtransactions. When will buying the game be enough to access all the content?"

EA Games this morning made a U-Turn and said that it would change how in-game credits worked and will reduce the amount needed to play certain characters.
A spokesperson wrote: "We’re reducing the amount of credits needed to unlock the top heroes by 75%. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader will now be available for 15,000 credits; Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa for 10,000 credits; and Iden at 5,000 credits. Based on what we’ve seen in the trial, this amount will make earning these heroes an achievement, but one that will be accessible for all players."
