Google Pixel 3 and Pixel Slate REVEALED – all we know about the ultimate iPhone and iPad rivals
There are two new phones AND a tablet angling for your pre-Christmas cash
SMARTPHONE fans now have a brand new gadget to look forward to: the Google Pixel 3. After months of rumours and leaks, the handset has finally been announced – and it's nearly ready to go on sale.
But the company also announced a brand new tablet called the Pixel Slate – the first Google tablet in three years.
Google Pixel 3 revealed – all the details you need to know
The phone comes in two variants – a Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.
The former has a 5.5-inch OLED screen, while the latter has an even bigger 6.3-inch display.
Importantly, both handsets have smaller screens than Apple's new iPhone XS (5.8 inches) and iPhone XS Max (6.5 inches).
Google has also packed the devices with premium features like dual front-facing speakers and wireless charging technology.
The camera is improved, snapping several images at once (at different exposures), combining them to create one amazing photo – just like Apple's new iPhone XS.
But Google claims to have trumped Apple with its selfie camera. According to Google, the wide-shooting front snapper captures 184% more of a scene than the iPhone XS.
You'll also be able to store an unlimited number of photos and videos through Google's Photos app.
The handset comes fitted with Google's "Titan" security chip, to help protect you from hackers with advanced privacy features.
And the two handsets will be available in "Just Black", "Clearly White" and "Not Pink" colour options.
The handset runs on Google's latest mobile software, Android 9.0.
It goes on sale from Thursday, October 11 for pre-orders, but won't actually ship to customers until November 1.
For UK customers, you'll pay £739 or £839 for the Pixel 3, depending on which storage variant you want.
The Pixel 3 XL is costlier, pricing in at £869 and £969.
There's an optional accessory called "Pixel Stand", which is basically a smart dock for the handset that also charges the device. This will cost £69.
Google Pixel Slate – a brand new tablet to take on the iPad
Google also unveiled a brand new tablet called the Pixel Slate at the event.
This device also falls under the Pixel family, and runs on Google's Chrome OS software.
Google said the tablet was designed to be thin and light, with the tablet rocking a relatively stylish "Midnight Blue" exterior.
It's got a fairly sharp screen that boasts 293 pixels-per-inch, trumping the 264 pixels-per-inch of Apple's 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
The speakers are positioned on the front of the device, offering stereo audio that a Google spokesperson described as "surprisingly big sound", with "crisp highs and clear lows".
There's also a Google-built keyboard for the Pixel Slate too that's designed to be particularly quiet – so you don't disturb desk neighbours with loud typing.
Google didn't give an official release date, but said the tablet would land "later this year" in the UK, USA and Canada. Pre-orders begin in November.
So how much will it cost? You're looking at £549 for the Pixel Slate, and an additional £189 for the keyboard.
