Mario Kart is FINALLY coming to your smartphone – but there’s some bad news

After years of waiting, fans will soon be able to play Nintendo's hit racing game without having to fork out for a games console

Mario Kart Tour

NINTENDO is finally bringing Mario Kart to your smartphone, but there's some bad news – it might not be available until next year.

The hugely popular game has always seemed like an obvious franchise to bring to mobile phones, so the real surprise is that it took Nintendo so long.

The new game is expected to debut before March 2019

Nintendo revealed the news in a late-night tweet

The news came courtesy of a tweet by Nintendo of America posted at 1am on February 1, 2018, which reads: "The checkered flag has been raised and the finish line is near."

"A new mobile application is now in development: Mario Kart Tour!"

The tweet adds that the game will be released "in the fiscal year ending in March 2019", which is massively vague.

That means it could launch any time between March 2018 and March 2019 – frustrating, much?

This is the moment a Real-life Mario Kart race took to the streets in Japan

The launch is a continuation of the Nintendo smartphone roadmap that was revealed last year.

At the time, Nintendo said it planned to release two or three games each year – previous releases included Super Mario Run, Animal Crossing, and Fire Emblem Heroes.

There's also talk about Nintendo developing a mobile game based on the iconic Legend of Zelda series, although this hasn't been officially confirmed.

Mario fans are already going wild about the announcement of Mario Kart Tour, with one user mocking up a visual of the game on Apple's new iPhone X:

Another suggested that this means big bucks for Nintendo: "And with one tweet Nintendo made 13 billion dollars..."

And one Nintendo fan simply said: "I'm crying tears of joy."

It's also basically confirmed that the game will be available in the UK – shortly after the US reveal, the UK Nintendo Twitter account posted the same news.
