Best Android games 2018 – the best free and premium games to play today
There's so much choice when it comes to Android games these days, so we've picked out some of the best games to help you choose what to play next
LOOKING for the best Android games in 2018? There are loads to choose from, and it can be hard to separate the wheat from the chaff.
We've been trying out mobile games for years, and have rounded up some of the best games on Android phones below.
Monument Valley 2
Genre: Puzzle
A sequel to the original hit, Monument Valley 2 is probably the most attractive puzzle game ever created for smartphones.
You guide a mother and her child through magical shifting architecture that becomes increasingly difficult to navigate, rewarding a logical mind and those with patience.
Alone
Genre: Arcade
Alone is an endlessly replayable infinite runner that sees you trying to make your way along a treacherous cavern in a small shuttle.
It's made difficult by the fact that the controls are intentionally twitchy, so even the slightest finger jerk will be punished with a wall-crash or death-by-falling-rock.
Duet
Genre: Arcade
Duet is unique in that the game requires you to control two vessels in sync, navigating through an increasingly confusing series of obstacles.
It'll require a lot of practice, but once you've mastered the paired vessels, you'll feel like a true pro guiding them past the walls – which eventually turn invisible, in the ultimate test of your hand-eye co-ordination.
Robot Unicorn Attack 2
Genre: Arcade
It's hard to explain why Robot Unicorn Attack is so addictive, but it definitely is.
You're a robot unicorn tasked with, well, nothing really – just running as far as you can. But the soundtrack is awesome, the graphics are incredible, and the adventure is gloriously trippy. A must-download, especially since it's free.
Timberman
Genre: Arcade
A surprise hit, Timberman is a seriously simple game that is very difficult to master.
You're a lumberjack chopping down an infinitely tall tree, and you have to dodge branches as they come out. You can flit between the left and right side of the tree by tapping, but you have to keep upping your chopping pace and avoiding obstacles to win. A great pick-up-and-play game.
Kingdom Rush Origins
Genre: Strategy
The Kingdom Rush series is basically the gold standard for strategy games on mobile.
This third installment lands as a long-awaited prequel, and is arguably the best entry to the saga so far. It's basically a tower defence game that tasks you with defending areas from evil fantasy foes, and it'll have you hooked in minutes.
Crossy Road
Genre: Action
Crossy Road needs no introduction. This reimagination of classic arcade game Frogger sees you take on the role of a chicken trying to cross the road.
It sounds easy, but you'll have to contend with fast-moving traffic, rapid rivers, and a creeping camera that forces you to keep moving.
Stack
Genre: Arcade
Stack is a simple arcade game that uses a similarly gorgeous visual style to Monument Valley.
The objective is to stack falling squares to create as tall a tower as possible. But if the squares are even slightly misaligned, you'll lose a bit of overall block size, which makes it harder to continue stacking – until eventually you run out of space completely.
It's attractive, fun, and satisfyingly difficult.
Super Hexagon
Genre: Arcade
Super Hexagon has garnered a reputation as one of the most fiendishly difficult mobile games ever made.
You use arrow keys to guide a cursor through ridiculously tiny gaps in fast-moving shapes, with the game quickly advancing to breakneck speeds.
You'll start off managing just a few seconds of life, but give this game some time and you may eventually master it – or crumble under the pressure.
Hearthstone
Genre: Card
This big-hitter card game from Activision Blizzard is based on the World of Warcraft universe, and successfully ports a physical game concept into the virtual world.
Tutorials guide you through the early stages of the game, so anyone can jump in without much difficulty. Once you've got a handle on it, you'll find great joy in the extensive (and ever-expanding) campaign mode, and thrilling multiplayer matches too.
Spaceteam
Genre: Word
Spaceteam is a co-op game for between two and eight players, forcing co-ordination among your team-mates who are desperately trying to follow time-sensitive instructions.
It's not an easy game, but Spaceteam is a great example of how gaming is done best when you're interacting with other people.
