Death Stranding PS4 release date – live stream, new trailer info, PS5 rumours and more revealed
Will veteran game developer Hideo Kojima's upcoming action game be the next Metal Gear? We've got all the details, including the release date and trailers
DEATH STRANDING is the debut game from Kojima Productions, the studio founded by visionary Metal Geal Solid creator Hideo Kojima – but when is it released?
Now-deleted social media postings from PlayStation in Taiwan seem to have revealed the exact date, and final confirmation is expected very soon.
What is Death Stranding?
Now that's a doozy.
Death Stranding has been described as an action game with online multiplayer elements.
The story centres around Sam Bridges (played by Walking Dead favourite Norman Reedus) "carrying the remnants of our future" in a "world transformed by the Death Stranding".
The latest trailer hints at the sort of political commentary Kojima is known for, seeing Bridges being begged to "make America whole again" by an apparently terminally-ill female US President lying on a hospital bed in the Oval Office.
Bridges refuses, saying "America is finished."
The trailer then shows gameplay featuring plenty of combat, and Bridges driving across various landscapes.
The game jumps from what look to be World War 1 trenches to Vietnam's jungles, with heavy supernatural overtones.
It is described as a purely single-player experience but according to Hideo Kojima, speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival, it's about "connection".
"You're very alone, there’s solitude, but you're trying to connect. The story and the gameplay, the key word is 'connection.'”
The core of the game is a “really new idea”, he explained cryptically.
"You’re connecting the game, and everyone is playing it together, and you’ll be connected, everyone will be connected together as well. I can’t say anything because Sony will be very unhappy. I don’t want to be disconnected from Sony."
But that's just scratching the surface of the mysterious title, described on the PlayStation store as "a journey to reunite the shattered world".
The story centres around Sam Bridges, the baby-cradling character above "carrying the remnants of our future" in a "world transformed by the Death Stranding".
The game has an all-star cast too, with Lindsay Wagner, Léa Seydoux, Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead), Guillermo Del Toro, and Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen, to name a few.
Death Stranding is powered by the Decima game engine from the creators of Horizon Zero Dawn.
It was used in that game and has been hyped for its handling of artificial intelligence and open worlds.
Death Stranding dates back to Kojima's time at Metal Gear Solid developer Konami, and his work on the since-shelved reboot of classic horror game Silent Hill.
So be prepared for frights.
That game became a casualty of Kojima's acrimonious split with Konami, with Kojima going on to start his own game studio, Kojima Productions.
