Marvel's Spider-Man news – what is it?

Peter Parker (and his superhero alter-ego) is about to star in his very own standalone game from the makers of Ratchet & Clank.

By standalone we mean it won't be connected to any of the Spider-Man movies.

But fans of the Marvel films needn't fret: it's much of the same in terms of the game's plot.

Peter Parker is struggling to balance his career and personal life with the responsibilities that come with his superpowers.

At 23-years-old, he's a more experienced crime-fighter having recently disposed of underworld boss the Kingpin.

But he ends up facing his biggest threat yet – in the guise of supervillain Mister Negative and his dragon-mask-wearing henchmen, the Inner Demons.

An origin story this ain't.

The entire gang is also present, including Parker's bae Mary Jane (who you control in key moments), Aunt May, and that other Spider-Man, Miles Morales.

As is now the norm, Marvel's Spider-Man boasts an open-world – allowing you to swing through New York City and pull off parkour stunts.

You can expect plenty of action and cinematic set-pieces, but no kills.

Developer Insomniac Games angered some fans when it announced that Spider-Man would save enemies rather than allowing them to die.

That's true heroism, isn't it?

Marvel's Spider-Man trailers – watch the teasers here

We were treated to our first glimpse of the game back in 2016, and since then an additional three trailers and featurettes have been released.

The most recent clip was showcased at Paris Games Week 2017 and gives us a run-through of the cinematic storyline.

Meanwhile, the gameplay was shown off in an E3 trailer from earlier that same year. You can watch the clips below.

Marvel's Spider-Man release date – when is it out?

Sony just announced the all-important release date, along with the game's box-art, and two deluxe editions.

The game will hit shelves on September 7 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive.

A digital deluxe edition of the game will throw in the post-launch DLC series, known as Marvel’s Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps (with three new chapters in the pipeline) for $79.99 (UK price TBA).

And a $149.99 (UK price TBA) physical collector's edition will include all of the above, along with a steelbook case, a mini artbook, and a Spider-Man statue.
