Fortnite 5.1 patch notes – Compact SMG, birthday challenges and playground mode
New P90-inspired submachine gun may salve some of those burned by the removal of the Tactical SMG
FORTNITE 5.1 is here, and it's brought a small hatful of changes with it.
After the ten-gallon hat of 5.0 and the start of season five, 5.1 is more of a fascinator--but some of the little changes are rather notable.
The arrival of the clearly P90-inspired Compact SMG -- in epic and legendary variants -- should mix up close combat with its 50-round capacity, 23-24 base damage and high rate of fire.
One major quality of life improvement - there is now a "sprint by default" option. Tick that box and you'll always run unless you deliberately choose to walk or creep.
Next up there is #Fortnite1st - a set of Birthday Challenges bringing with them a slew of suitably celebratory rewards.
Complete three challenges in Battle Royale or complete a questline in Save The World, and you'll be able to celebrate in style.
Another cause for good cheer is the return of the Playground Limited Time Mode. This LTM was expected to return at some point, but few had dared hope it would be back this soon.
Playground comes back online tomorrow. This time it will let you set up team battles for training with your squad, it has a bussful of extra loot, and it's now got Karts and the other changes made in 5.0 applied.
Supply drops have also had a major overhaul.
They no longer drop hand cannon, dual pistols or silenced pistols, damage traps, boogie bombs, grenades, stink bombs, bandages port-a-forts or bushes.
However, they will drop non-damage traps such as launch pads and bouncers much more often, as well as giving you more heavy shotguns and assault rifles.
Wood and metal walls have been given a slight buff; Wood walls' starting health is up 25 per cent, and the amount of a pounding they can take when finished is up 33 per cent. Metal walls have had their maximum durability extended 25 per cent at the cost of a 25 per cent increase in build time.
Stone walls have been given a tiny nerf - their strength when first built is dropping eleven per cent, but everything else is staying the same.

Save The World now has a desert biome called Canny Valley, which comes with a new storyline and secrets to uncover.
