Apple event – New iPhone XS, colourful iPhone XR, Apple Watch series 4 launch and more

APPLE revealed a host of their newest gadgets at a grand unveiling last night – including three new iPhones, and the Apple Watch 4.

Here's a complete guide to all the announcements, and expert commentary too.

Apple CEO Tim Cook kicked off proceedings with an appearance on stage at the Steve Jobs Theatre, inside the company's new Apple Park campus.

"Apple was founded to make the computer more personal," Cook began. He also revealed that more than 500million people visit Apple stores every single year – that's one-fourteenth of Earth's population.

And this year, they'll be spending big: Apple's new iPhones are the most expensive we've ever seen. The iPhone XS starts at £999, with the top model costing up to £1,449.

There's also a new Apple Watch to chew over, as well as a slightly more budget iPhone XR – starting at a lofty £749...

New iPhone XS revealed – 2018 Apple smartphones confirmed

Tim Cook announced brand new Apple smartphones at the Wednesday event.

It's called the iPhone XS, and will be available in Gold, Silver and Space Grey colour options.

There are two sizes for the new phone – 5.8 inches and 6.5 inches. The latter is called the iPhone XS Max, and has the biggest screen ever featured on an iPhone.

They both come with Apple's Face ID facial recognition technology too, letting you unlock your phone by scanning your face.

And Apple has created a brand new processor the A12 for the iPhone XS, which should run up to 50% faster than last year's iPhone chip.

As expected, Apple also added Dual SIM support for the new phones – meaning you can use two SIMs (and by extension, two phone numbers) at once. This is great for travellers, who can keep their UK SIM but also use cheaper local SIM cards at their destinations.

Apple is also kitting its iPhone XS out with the latest iOS 12 software update.

This includes a new feature called Siri Shorcuts, that lets you carry out multiple tasks in a single command.

For instance, you could ask Siri to set a timer and tell you about the weather in one single query.

You'll also be able to link this system up to non-Apple apps, like smart home thermostats or music services – previously impossible with Siri.

Apple has also significantly upgraded the camera system for the new iPhone XS.

On the back of the iPhone XS, there's a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera paired up with a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, working in a dual-snapper system.

The wide-angle camera sensor now has a wider f/1.8 aperture however, which should improve image quality – by allowing more light to be drawn in.

"This is an amazing amount of power," said Apple's Phil Schiller, who said the camera's image processor is capable of doing a trillion operations at once for every photo you take.

Sadly, pricing is through the roof this year, with Apple revealing the most expensive iPhones ever:

• iPhone XS Max (64GB) – £1,099
• iPhone XS Max (256GB) – £1,249

By comparison, last year's iPhone 8 started at £699, while the iPhone X ranged from £999 to £1,149.

The iPhone XS will be available to pre-order from Friday, with a release date set for September 21.

iPhone XR – a third, cheaper Apple phone revealed

Apple also made a surprise announcement about a third new smartphone – the confusingly named iPhone XR.

It's separate from the core iPhone XS series, and is designed as a cheaper option, rocking a less premium LCD screen.

Despite being a more budget model, it's got many high-end features – including the swanky all-screen design introduced with last year's iPhone X.

That means it also boasts Face ID facial recognition, just like the pricier iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

One of the biggest compromises is that it doesn't get the ritzy OLED screen its siblings have. It also misses out on a premium stainless frame – instead, it's got cheaper aluminium edging.

Excitingly, the iPhone XR features Apple's new A12 Bionic processor, which is the same chip inside the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

The phone is available in the following colours: White, Black, Blue, Yellow, Coral, and (Product)Red.

Pricing for different storage variants is as follows:

• iPhone XR (64GB) – £749
• iPhone XR (128GB) – £799
• iPhone XR (256GB) – £899

This model will come later than the iPhone XS – pre-orders open on October 19, before shipping on October 26.

Apple Watch Series 4 revealed – a new smartwatch

Apple unveiled a brand new smartwatch live on stage – the Apple Watch Series 4.

The watch was described as "beautiful" by Apple COO Jeff Williams, who says the screens are between 32% and 35% larger, depending on the model you buy. It's also slimmer than last year's Apple Watch.

The user interface has been re-designed to adapt to this change, with Apple adding more detail onto your watch faces. One new face now has eight complications (or features) on screen at a single time.

The coolest new feature is the watch's ability to detect when you've fallen over, causing it to deliver an alert that lets you initiate an emergency call. If the watch senses that you're immobile for more than a minute, it will start the call automatically, and contact the emergency contact in your phone, too.

You can also use it to take an electrocardiogram (ECG) in just 30 seconds, giving you insight into your heart's rhythm. This can alert you to serious health issues ahead of time, giving you data you can easily share with your doctor.

You can order the device starting on Friday, with the official release set for September 21. Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS) starts at £399 and Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular) starts at £499.

Apple event rumours – what was tipped to launch tonight?

We've seen endless leaks and rumours in the run-up to Wednesday's Apple event.

Prior to the event, Apple accidentally leaked details about three new smartphone models – which turned out to be correct.

All three were leaked as having the same all-screen design we saw from Apple's 2017 iPhone X. This meant they'd all be getting Face ID facial recognition tech for unlocking your phone, too. Also correct, as it turns out.

Other rumours about the big day suggested we'd see a new iPad Pro, an Apple Watch 4, and even new AirPods wireless earbuds. Only the Apple Watch 4 rumour came true, sadly.
