iPhone XS Max – what is it?

Last September, Apple revealed three smartphones: the 4.7-inch iPhone 8, the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus, and the 5.8-inch iPhone X.

This year, we're expecting a 5.8-inch iPhone XS, a 6.1-inch iPhone 9, and a mystery 6.5-inch handset too.

According to reliable tech site , the latter handset will be called iPhone XS Max – rather than the previously rumoured iPhone XS Plus name.

Apple hasn't confirmed this, but the report cites "two sources familiar with Apple's marketing plans".

iPhone XS Max release date – when is it out?

The rest of the report re-confirms many of the iPhone 2018 leaks we've seen so far.

Apple is set to hold a major press event on September 12 (yes, that's today) where we'll see a host of new gadgets.

The headline announcement coming at 6pm is rumoured to be three new iPhone models.

These phones should be available to pre-order from September 14, with an on-sale date of September 21.

iPhone XS Max news – what's changing with this model?

The big change this year is that all three phones are expected to borrow last year's iPhone X design.

In 2017, Apple's iPhone X introduced a new all-screen look – made possible by removing the Home button.

This also meant removing the fingerprint scanner (which lives inside the Home button). To make up for that, Apple added a new Face ID facial recognition system that scans your head to unlock the phone.

Apple is expected to include an all-screen design and Face ID on all three iPhone models for 2018.

Pricing is tipped to range from £599 to £699 for the cheapest model, right up to £999 to £1,049 for the premium iPhone XS Max.
