VANISHING ACT

Apple’s missing gadgets – iPad Pro and 3 other rumoured products that DIDN’T launch on Wednesday

APPLE revealed a host of new gadgets on Wednesday evening – but some rumoured products didn't make the cut.

While you chew over the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and Apple Watch 4, here are four mysteriously missing items.

New iPad Pro

Apple already revamped its entry-level iPad earlier this year, with a cheap new £319 model.

That leaves the pricier iPad Pro range in need of an update.

It was rumoured that Apple would adopt an iPhone X style design for the iPad Pro – or iPad X, as it may soon be called.

That means we could see a swanky iPad with a front face that's filled almost entirely by display.

Adding fuel to this rumour fire is a major spoiler for Face ID on the iPad, which was spotted in Apple's own code.

A developer named Guilherme Rambo dug into the beta code for Apple's new iOS 12 update for the iPhone and iPad.

In it, Apple made reference to Face ID on the iPad, including a set-up page and a relevant settings menu.

Given the iPad Pro didn't make the September event, we may instead see it announced at a showcase later in 2018.

Cheaper MacBook

APPLE is supposedly working on a brand new version of the MacBook Air that's genuinely affordable.

Tech expert Daniel Ives told The Sun that the new model could cost as little as £699 earlier this year.

And highly respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed a new model with launch "with a lower price tag" in 2018, too.

It was rumoured that we'd see this new model at Wednesday's event, but sadly it never happened.

New AirPods

A recent report claimed Apple was working on a new version of 2016's iconic AirPods earbuds.

The current Apple AirPods are small wireless earbuds that come with a charging case.

According to Bloomberg, the AirPods 2 will boast a number of new features, including noise-cancellation.

Noise-cancelling headphones feature a tiny microphone that picks up the ambient noise around you.

A built-in computer system is able to map out the sound wave for that noise – whether it's an airplane cabin or the rumble of a London Underground tube.

The headphones then create a noise-cancelling sound wave that's 180-degrees out of phase with the original sound wave.

This new sound wave is played back through your ear, effectively cancelling out the ambient noise around you.

It means you'll be able to better focus on the music you're listening too, rather than being frustrated by dull background sounds in your office, or on the bus.

Apple is also reportedly working on adding water-resistance to the new AirPods.

Maybe these new AirPods will be revealed at the next iPad event – or perhaps never at all.

AirPower Charger

Apple first announced the AirPower wireless charging mat last year.

It was debuted on stage alongside the £999 iPhone X and Apple Watch Series 3 at Apple's annual September event.

But there's been a huge delay with the product, and it was expected that we'll see it in stores in September 2018 instead – which clearly hasn't happened

The whole idea behind the charging mat is to make powering up gadgets much easier for Apple enthusiasts.

During last year's keynote, Apple demonstrated the mat charging an iPhone X, Apple Watch and wireless AirPods headphones all at the same time.

It's based on a wireless charging technology called Qi, which is widely used by tech companies.

But Qi wireless charging doesn't typically allow for multiple devices to be charged at once, which has proved challenging for Apple.

A recent Bloomberg article that Apple was forced to delay the product for exactly that reason.

Will we see it in 2018? We're not so sure.
