Amazon accidentally leaks new Alexa gadgets – including ‘powerful subwoofer’ called Echo Sub

AMAZON has accidentally leaked upcoming Alexa gadgets ahead of their official announcement.

The site uploaded images of a new subwoofer, as well as a previously unseen smart plug that can turn normal appliances into "connected" devices.

The gaffe was first spotted by tech blog , who discovered pages for both products on Amazon's official website.

Amazon has since taken the products down, but they've been preserved for eternity through the magic of screenshotting.

The headline product is the Echo Sub, which is described as a "powerful subwoofer".

Interestingly, the device doesn't appear to be a standalone gadget.

Instead, Amazon seems to be offering it as an add-on for anyone purchasing the standard £89.99 Amazon Echo (2nd-gen) Alexa speaker.

On the order page for the existing speaker, a screen-grabbed pop-up reads: "Add rich bass to your music experience with Echo Sub".

It looks like Amazon wants you to connect the subwoofer to your speaker, boosting its audio capabilities significantly.

The subwoofer is listed at £75, which – when added to the Amazon Echo price – would result in a total cost of £164.99.

It's not clear if Amazon is offering any bundle deals at this stage.

The product's description reads: "Echo Sub delivers down-firing 100W deep bass sound through a 6-inch woofer.

"Pair with one Echo or Echo Plus (sold separately) to enjoy dynamic music that fills the room.

"Pair with two of the same compatible Echo devices for rich left/right stereo sound."

It's described as being "simple to set up", and wirelessly connects to your Echo – rather than plugging in directly.

What is Alexa?

If you've never heard of Alexa, here's what you need to know...

  • Alexa is an "intelligent" personal assistant built by Amazon.
  • You can find her on several different devices, including Amazon's Echo speakers.
  • Alexa responds to voice commands, and can talk back to you.
  • She can perform thousands of different tasks, including telling you about the news or weather.
  • But she can do more complex things too, like ordering a pizza or arranging an Uber taxi pick-up.
  • To activate Alexa, you need to say "Alexa" to an Amazon Echo speaker.
  • Alexa currently only works in English and German languages.
  • Because she's powered by artificial intelligence, Alexa is constantly getting smarter.
  • Alexa will also get more used to your voice, and better understand what you want her to do over time.

The second gadget leaked by Amazon is called Smart Plug, and was listed at a fairly hefty £95 (so we'd take that with a pinch of salt for now).

Smart plugs are a neat little gadget that let you give a "connected" upgrade to your normal home products.

For instance, if you have a lamp, you could plug it into the Smart Plug, and then plug that into the wall.

Then you'd be able to control the lamp using an app, turning it on or off.

Similarly, you should also be able to turn the lamp on or off using your voice, through Alexa.

Amazon hasn't confirmed any of these products, but it's not the first time we're hearing about new Alexa gadgets.

Glasgow woman swears at 'racist' Alexa device that only understands her when she puts on dodgy cockney accent

Earlier this week, CNBC reported that Amazon was planning to launch eight new Alexa devices before the end of 2018.

There's no firm release date yet, but several products were detailed.

These included an Alexa-powered microwave oven, an in-car gadget, and some kind of amplifier – likely the Echo Sub leaked today.

We've asked Amazon for comment and will update this story with any response.
