It's called beta testing, and it's a common practice among tech companies.

Rather than releasing new features to everyone at once, they'll trial them with a few users to see whether they work well.

Netflix is no different, offering various beta test participation schemes for different devices.

If you sign up, you may notice the Netflix app or website changing frequently – and sometimes not always for the better.

How to sign up to Netflix testing on desktop

Turning Netflix testing on is really easy.

Go onto the desktop version of Netflix and then click on Account.

From there, go to Test Participation, and you'll be taken to a screen that lets you opt in to receiving new features.

Netflix explains: "Participate in tests to help improve the Netflix experience and see potential changes before they are available to all members."

It's possible to toggle this setting at any time, so you can easily return to the "standard experience" whenever you like.

How to sign up to Netflix Android beta

It's also possible to sign up to a beta test for the Netflix mobile app on Android.

Often the mobile app will receive specific changes that are separate from the desktop or TV versions of Netflix.

"This helps us ensure the application is stable and working properly before a full release," explains Netflix.

To participate, you need:

  • An active Netflix subscription
  • A Google Play Store account
  • A Google Play-certified, non-rooted Android phone or tablet running at least Android 5.0

To sign up to the beta, simply follow this .

If you ever want to quit the Android beta test, click .

Then you'll need to uninstall the beta version of the Netflix app and reinstall the public version from the Google Play Store.

If the Play Store says the beta channel is full when you try to join, it means Netflix is at maximum capacity – there's a limit to the number of beta testsers.

Signing up means you'll get access to new features, but all TV shows and movies will remain exactly the same as the standard version of Netflix.

That means you won't get access to secret telly just by signing up to the beta.
