Red Dead Online kicks off – Red Dead Redemption 2 multiplayer now open to everyone

Everyone with a copy of the hit game can now jump into the online world and start a fresh adventure

RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 launched at a single-player only experience last month, with a multiplayer game to go alongside it promised as a free bonus some time in November.

Rockstar ended up cutting that quite fine, with the full release of Red Dead Online only coming today.

Some players managed to get in early to kick the tyres as the developer ramped up their server capacity and ironed out some back-end bugs.

Those who owned the Ultimate Edition of the game could into Red Dead Online on Wednesday, with others following shortly afterwards.

In Red Dead Online you can create an entirely custom character from scratch, with access to the game's entire map, including the US parts from Red Dead Redemption that didn't feature in the main storyline for RDR2.

It also has more conveniences than the single-player too. You can access a catalogue to re-stock on provisions on the go, you can fast travel from signposts, and more.

There are also a whole host of co-operative story missions you can jump into, starting in Blackwater.

Finally, there are treasure maps galore -- you'll get one when you hit Rank 10 online, and another one every five levels there after.

You'll be able to compete solo or in a posse of up to eight players in several modes, including Most Wanted, Make It Count, Name Your Weapon, Team Shootout, Hostile Territory and even a few races.

The open world elements of the single-player game remain, so you can raid gang hideouts, go fishing, or take part in Free Roam events.

These will work similarly to GTA Online, where events happen at regular intervals in-game that you can either jump into or ignore at your leisure.
