GTA Online gets Arena War – deadly vehicles and more game modes coming today

'Ruthless gladiatorial combat meets the bleeding-edge of vehicular modification technology' in the game's new mode, which comes with all-new vehicle types that you can take out onto the streets of Los Santos

ROCKSTAR may be busy with Red Dead Online, but that doesn't mean it's giving up on the money-making machine that is GTA Online quite yet.

Today it is launching an update that features seven new modes as part of an entirely new career. Arena War also brings a host of customisable and violent new vehicle types.

GTA Online is the multiplayer portion of GTA V, and sees players across the fictional world of Los Santos try and build up businesses -- both above board and not -- and wreak havoc.

In Arena War, "ruthless gladiatorial combat meets the bleeding-edge of vehicular modification technology in one spectacular – and highly combustible – competition", according to Rockstar.

The modes include not one but TWO battle royale modes.  In Hot Bomb one player starts with The Bomb, and passes it on by crashing into an opponent.

Last man standing wins -- but once you're eliminated you can still wreak havoc with the Arena War Wheel in the spectator lounge.

Carnage is a straight-up last-man standing contest in any of the ridiculously destructive vehicles available.

There is also a capture the flag mode, monster trucks vs compacts and more.

All this launches alongside a new Arena Workshop and career, where you can take a humble road car and upgrade it into a rolling machine of death.

GTA V is the most profitable entertainment product of all time, with revenues around £5 billion, with up to £1 billion of that coming from GTA Online.

Rockstar's parent company Take-Two recently took legal action against two players it accused of selling cheats for the game.

Take-Two said at the time that it was going to continue using the courts to block those who created "disruptions" in GTA's online world.

Meanwhile, Red Dead Online has only been available for everyone for a week or so, and is still very much in a testing phase, with economy rebalancing and other tweaks on the way.

Red Dead Redemption 2 had the biggest opening weekend in entertainment history off the back of a truly excellent single-player mode.

It stormed to the top of the UK sales charts with double the physical sales of its predecessor

It's even caused searches for cowboy and wild west themed smut to skyrocket.
