Leak ‘reveals AMD chip’ as the brains of the PlayStation 5 AND the next Xbox

SONY'S next PlayStation console and Microsoft's next-generation Xbox could be powered by the same chip, according to the latest high-tech leaks.

The AMD Gonzalo, revealed by a prolific tech leaker known only as TUM_APISAK on Twitter, looks like it might be at the heart of both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Two.

The new chip will have eight 'cores' -- essentially mini-chips inside the main one that can all run tasks independently.

Gonzalo is based on AMD's latest 7 nanometre designs, which are currently only to be seen in its latest Ryzen chips.

This means that its smallest features are one quarter the size of the current PS4 and Xbox One chips, promising a significant boost in performance and power usage.

Gonzalo's cores will be able to operate between 1GHz and 3.2GHz, according to the leak, which again is a significant jump over the PS4 and Xbox One.

Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X run on AMD Jaguar chips, running at 2.13GHz and 2.3GHz respectively, so the new hardware promises a significant boost in performance.

Gonzalo's dedicated graphics processing unit will be based on AMD's next-generation 'Navi' architecture.

Microsoft confirmed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last month that AMD chips would be used for its next-generation Xboxes, while it has been rumoured for some time that the next PlayStation will as well.
