PS4 Remote Play is finally officially coming to to Apple devices.

It's been almost five years since the app first launched on Android, and up until now there was no official equivalent for iPhone- or iPad-owning PlayStation fans.

Thankfully the latest PS4 Firmware Update has addressed this long-standing oversight, and an app to let you take advantage of it.

You will, naturally, need to own the game you are trying to play.

As with the Android and Vita versions, your PS4 needs to be running to allow you to play the games -- all the app does is allow your device to act remotely as the screen for your PS4 rather than running the games itself.

This can be any game you've downloaded, or one you own physically if the disk is in the drive.

The PS4 Remote Play app is free to download, and your PS4 will install the update allowing it automatically the next time you try and go online if it hasn't already.

Previously anyone wanting to try and do this would have had to use a third-party app such as R-Play and pay £11.99 for the privilege.

You can play games using on-screen controls via your device's touch screen if you like, but they can mean you end up blocking out a lot of the action on-screen.

While you can't connect a PlayStation controller to your iPhone unless it's been jailbroken, you can use any of the huge number of third-party controllers on the market.

The news comes days after Sony finally officially confirmed it was ending production of the PlayStation Vita, the company's last hand-held console.

One of the main early draws of the Vita was the ability for it to stream home console games, and act as a second screen for games that supported the feature.

Now you can do both of these on practically any modern smartphone, it's no wonder that Sony felt able to can the device.

The only other change of any note in the update is the ability, in some regions, to change the default functionality of the O and X buttons in menus.

The change means you can change O (originally meant to indicate acceptance) to be the default 'enter' button, and have X (meant to represent crossed arms and indicate no) act as the cancel button, and vice versa.

Previously this was simply a region-wide setting, with many Asian countries being set up differently the Western systems.
