BRAIN BOXES

Xbox 2 and PS5 could be released sooner than expected – and be twice as fast

THE PlayStation 5 and Xbox Two could be closer to release and even more powerful than we thought if new testing results are to be believed.

They appear to show that the chip that is expected to drive them is up to 80 per cent faster than the last time we saw results for it, which would give the machines a huge boost.

The first tests showed the chip had a base speed of 1Ghz for both its graphics and processing, while the new tests see them clocking in at 1.6Ghz and 1.8Ghz respectively.

The results are for latest "Qualification Sample" of the AMD Gonzalo chip that we're expecting to be the brains of both the PS5 and Xbox 2 when they're released.

The arrival of this type of sample and some other changes in the testing data spotted suggest the chip is also getting close to proper production.

We were already expecting the two next-generation powerhouses to be twice as powerful as the current consoles, and this update suggests that's likely to be a conservative estimate.

That means they will both handily outperform the Google Stadia hardware too.

While it is entirely possible that Google Stadia, Microsoft xCloud and similar services mean that the next generation of PlayStation consoles and Xbox devices could well be the last games consoles you ever need to buy, at least they look set to go out with a bang.

Sony aren't going to go down without a fight, though.

Patents suggest it could take the fight to streaming services with super-powerful new VR hardware as well as offering the ability to run any PlayStation game ever made.

That would give it a library of 10,000 games to choose from without breaking a sweat, and undercutting one of the main appeals of streaming services.

That's not to mention the limitations based on Internet speed streaming services already face.
