PS5’s chips built for Sony’s ‘special sauce’, says AMD
AMD is making the chips at the heart of the PlayStation 5, and say they have built something unique for Sony's new console.
Building the hardware is a "great honor" according to AMD boss Lisa Su, who says her company is "really excited" about what the PS5 will be capable of.
Two different AMD chips will power the PS5, and it is expected that the Xbox 2 will have very similar technology at its core too.
But that doesn't mean they'll be the same, according to AMD, who revealed they have designed and are building something special for the next PlayStation.
"What we have done with Sony is really architect something for their application, for their special sauce," Su .
"It’s a great honor for us," Su said.
"We’re really excited about what the next generation PlayStation will do."
2019 will be a "big year" for AMD, though this won't include the PS5 chips or a bunch of other new products that they have up their sleeves, she said.
The next PlayStation, which doesn't officially have a name yet, will be able to output games in 8K resolution, and will support ray-tracing technology that promises the most realistic looking games ever seen on a console.

It's not going to come out until the middle of next year at the earliest, and Su did not offer any concrete hints as to when sales of the chips might start impacting on AMD's bottom line.
"As we go three to five years forward, we have a lot of things in the hopper," Su said.
Google recently confirmed that AMD chips are going to be at the heart of its Stadia game-streaming services -- but again, we have no idea when Google might start buying these in bulk to get ready to make the service available to eager gamers.
