GTA 6 not coming out until late 2020 at the earliest, but expect to see it on your phone
GTA fans hoping for a new game in the next 12 months are going to be disappointed, as the next game in the series won't be here until late 2020 at the absolute earliest.
Take-Two, which owns GTA developer Rockstar, revealed it expects to make less money next year than this year, dashing hopes of a new full GTA game in that period.
GTA V had one of the biggest launches in entertainment history and continues to rake in the cash, so a new GTA game would certainly be expected to boost the company's bottom line.
In the three months to March 31 this year, Take-Two trousered £371 million ($488.4 million) from eager gamers, £14 million less than analysts had expected.
The firm said it expects 2020 to be "another strong year", but admitted that "operating results currently forecasted to be lower than fiscal 2019."
As previous rumours suggested GTA 6 does look to be on the way, though.
Given that "geographic expansion" has to mean an attempt to tap into the enormous Chinese gaming market and his words about bringing current franchises to mobile, the dominant platform in the region, a new mobile version of GTA made palatable for the Chines market now seems inevitable.
The record-breaking launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 meant the company made £2 billion between April last year and the end of March this year.
Take-Two also revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 Online is performing better than GTA Online was at the same point after release,
The firm's revenue was also boosted by selling another 10 million copies of GTA V since it passed the 100-million mark late last year, implying gamers are still buying 2.5 million copies every month.
Red Dead Redemption 2, meanwhile, has sold 1 million copies in the past three months, taking it to a total of 24 million.
Borderlands 3 is coming out this September, and should help Take-Two's bottom line.
The Borderlands franchise is arguably Take-Two's second biggest after GTA, with 20 million copies of 2012's Borderlands 2 sold and a million people a month still playing it online.
The game from Gearbox was officially unveiled earlier this month, and Ahmad reports Take-Two confirmed to investors it will be at E3
Other games we know are due out this year include an expansion to the phenomenal cult hit Kerbal Space Program, Breaking Ground, NBA 2K20, WWE2K20, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, and The Outer Worlds.
Take-Two also confirmed it has more unannounced games that would be coming out this year, with more information to follow.
This news does suggest that GTA 6 will be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox 2, possibly alongside current-generation iterations.
The PlayStation 5 is also due out after March 2020, while many gamers are hoping details about the Xbox 2 are revealed by Microsoft at E3 in Los Angeles next month.
Zelnick did hint that GTA 6 and other future games from Take-Two could come to streaming platforms such as Google Stadia, echoing comments Borderlands 3 producer Chris Brock made to Sun Online earlier this month.
