Engravings on stone dating back 35,000 years were made by skilled Neanderthals using two tools

The findings represent a major step in human evolution, according to scientists

ENGRAVINGS on a stone that dates back 35,000 years were created by a skilled Neanderthal using two different tools.

They may be only a series of zig-zag lines, but scientists say they represent a major step in human evolution.

The Bordeaux University researchers said: “These engravings appear to have been made with symbolic or communicative intent.”

That would suggest Neanderthals were much more intelligent than previously believed.

The stone was dug out of sediments at a cave site in the Crimea.

Prehistoric Neanderthal humans could have survived 3,000 years later than we previously thought
