Wetherspoons budget hotel rooms are rated the best in the UK beating five-star rivals
WETHERSPOON has been rated the best hotel chain in the UK, according to a recent survey.
The Which? study found that the budget hotel was the best 'value for money' with guests praising them for their 'sympathetically' converted buildings.
It is the first time the hotel chain has been the top of the rankings, according .
Premier Inn — the winning chain in the past four years - was joint first this time.
Both groups achieved a score of 79 per cent, beating big-name brands including Hilton and Marriott.
More than 8,000 guests were asked to rate 34 chains on categories including cleanliness, bed comfort, food, service and value.
They praised Wetherspoon Hotels for "huge stylish rooms" and value for money — with stays from £39 a night.
However, guests also only gave three stars to the hotel for cleanliness and communal areas.
Premier Inn also fell short when it came to facilities in the shared areas, as well as food and drink options.
Despite the few three-star ratings, guests said Premier Inn is "not overly fancy" but is "good quality" and a "competitive price".
Which? Travel editor Rory Boland said: "If you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful stay you’d be better off choosing the ever-reliable Premier Inn or a Wetherspoon."
Hilton also scored highly, however, receiving 78 per cent for Hilton Garden Inn and 74 per cent for Hilton Hampton.
Britannia was ranked the UK’s worst hotel chain for the seventh year in a row.
Thirty-one per cent of guests rated it poor for cleanliness, according to the survey by Which? Travel.
When a Which? investigator checked in to the Britannia Lodge at Gatwick, they were greeted with ‘damp smells’ emanating from a clogged ventilation fan and a ‘grubby’ bathtub.
Even worse, an ultraviolet light showed up stains that could not be seen with the naked eye, on both the bed sheets and the walls surrounding the toilet.
EasyHotel and Ibis Budget were also among the worst scoring chains.
