The stunning Greek island where Mamma Mia was filmed featuring the iconic wedding chapel
MAMMA Mia is a family favourite film, featuring a young girl intent on finding her father before her own wedding.
However, fans of the show may wonder where it was filmed - and thankfully it isn't too far from the UK.
The story takes place on the fictional island Kalokairi, which was actually filmed on Skopelos island in Greece.
Following Sophie, (played by Amanda Seyfriend), she invites three of her mum's former lovers to the island for her wedding to Sky (played by Dominic Cooper).
Also featuring famous faces including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, the film sings and dances around the once relatively-unknown island.
Skopelos is home to just 4,700 locals, and tourist numbers remain low due to the difficultly in getting there.
With no direct airport, the best way to travel is by plane to the island of Skiathos, then an hour-long ferry from there.
One unusual custom on the island is that society is matrilineal - meaning money and property are passed down the female line, not the male line, like many other islands.
Mamma Mia fans can visit many of the locations they see on screen.
The exterior of the Agios Iaonnis, a chapel located on a 100m rock edge, is well known for featuring the wedding between Sophie and Sky.
However, it is much smaller than in the film, with the interior being created elsewhere for filming purposes.
Kastani beach is also by far the most popular beach, being used for the scenes featuring 'Lay All Your Love On Me' and 'Does Your Mother Know'.
While it isn't the easiest destination to get to, start from just £271 including seven nights and return flights.
A one-hour ferry from Skiathos to Skopelos costs less than £5, taking between 15 and 30 minutes.
If you want to stay on the island, there are a number of affordable hotels and Airbnbs costing under £80 a night.
Fans will be stunned to hear that the Mamma Mai sequel was not filmed on the same island - and instead was filmed on the Croatian island Vis.
