From 11pm UK time on Monday - people coming from the UK who are fully vaccinated or who have an important reason for travelling will be allowed to enter Germany.

Those who are fully jabbed will not need a negative Covid test or need to quarantine for 14 days, the embassy said.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps described it as a "welcome development from our German colleagues".

Germany announced earlier this month it was tightening restrictions on travel from the UK in an attempt to curb the spread of the Omicron variant.

The rules, which came into force on December 19, banned carriers such as airlines transporting British tourists to Germany.

Only German citizens and residents, their partners and children, and transit passengers, were allowed to travel to the country from the UK.

Anyone entering the nation needed a negative PCR test and was required to quarantine for 14 days, regardless of vaccination status.

France imposed similar restrictions for UK travellers from December 18.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Macron's government said it would now show "tolerance" towards Brits transiting through France over the new year.

The interior ministry had earlier remained stubborn in its decision to ban Brits living in the EU from entering France.

However, a spokesman later said that the ministry's position had been reversed and that "during the year-end holidays", police on the border would show "tolerance".

Yesterday, UK Government officials said they were "urgently seeking clarification" after Brits who live in the EU were stopped at the Eurotunnel.

Passengers hoping to travel from the UK to Belgium, Italy, Spain and Germany were told they were no longer be able to drive or take a train through France to get there.

The Eurotunnel links Folkestone in England and Coquelles, near Calais.

There were also unconfirmed reports that P&O Ferries had issued similar advice to their passengers.
