Brits warned about ‘too good to be true’ holiday deals – how to avoid getting caught out

BRITS have been warned of holiday deals that may not be all they seem - and actually cost hundreds of pounds more than they say.

New research from Which? looked at a number of tour operators and deal websites, and found that the "discounts" were not as they seemed.

For example, Which? found that a five-star holiday in Spain with LoveHolidays was a "discounted" rate from £736pp down to £443pp.

However, the discount is actually when comparing the "price of the holiday we were looking at with the highest priced dates on its site" rather than it being a direct like-for-like saving.

This meant that the highest price was during peak season - likely to be more expensive - compared to more recent price.

A LoveHolidays spokesperson said they were "fully committed" to complying with consumer guidelines.

Which? also found deals from TUI to be confusing for consumers.

While a holiday they analysed had "52 per cent off original price," this was actually based on the holiday's "launch price" which doesn't explain when this was.

A TUI spokesperson said: "We operate a dynamic pricing model, which means the cost of holidays can fluctuate throughout the year as they are impacted by many factors.

"We are already undertaking an internal review of the discount wording and will update this for our customers where required."

Other ways holiday firms were found to inflate prices were by suggesting huge discounts up to 39 per cent - only to be cheaper on the hotel website directly

There are a number of ways Brits can make sure they are getting a good deal, rather than an inflated discount.

Here are the three ways, according to Which? to ind a real holiday bargain.

  1. Check prices directly with the airline
  2. Be wary of "hurry" deals, as well as those saying how many people are looking at the offer.
  3. Check the deal is for your dates, as the cheapest is likely to be midweek or off-season.
