Can you use AirPods on a plane?

The good news is you can use AirPods on a plane.

Just like using any other wireless headphones the Civil Aviation Authority allow the use of Bluetooth accessories, such as AirPods on planes.

So, whether you're tuning in to watch a pre-downloaded film or watch your inflight entertainment, you can sit back, relax and listen with your AirPods.

All you have to do is simply re-enable Bluetooth to connect your AirPods.

However, you must ensure you are not using cellular data.

In order to use your AirPods - you must switch your mobile or electronic device to airplane mode for the duration of your flight.

This prevents your phone from transmitting wireless signals.

Devices without a “flight safe” mode will need to be turned off for the duration of the flight.

Most airlines will recommend that you not use AirPods or any other electronics during taxi, take-off, landing, and the safety briefing.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority: ''The safety briefing and the safety information card provided near your seat give vital information on the location of exits and emergency equipment.

''As this can vary from one aircraft type to another, it is important to pay attention to the safety briefing and read the safety card each time you fly.''

There may also be times when the pilot or cabin crew ask for all electronic devices to be switched off.

What kind of headphones work on a plane?

Airline policy states that passengers must use headphones when listening to audio from electronic devices - but what kind of headphones work on a plane?

The easiest option for passengers travelling on a plane is to use Bluetooth or wireless headphones.

If you prefer to use headphones that require connection, then the good news is planes do have headphone jacks.

However, most airplanes use 2.5mm jacks which are relatively smaller and therefore require you to use an adapter, as most audio devices use a 3.5mm jack.

Can I use my phone on a plane to listen to music?

If you're not a regular jet-setter, then you may be unsure on the rules regarding using your phone while on a plane.

But don't worry - we've got all the answers covered.

Until a few years ago, passengers were asked to keep their mobile phone switched off during a flight.

But airline rules are different now and they’re constantly changing - and so are the dos and don’ts on mobile phones on airplanes.

Phone use is allowed on planes if you put your device on airplane mode - but you must ensure they are charged.

Airport security staff may ask you to turn on any electronic or battery-powered devices to demonstrate their function.

If you are unable to do so, you will not be able to take your device with you.

This also applies to laptops, tablets, and e-books.

Passengers are free to listen to music on their phone, provided that the cellular connection of the device isn’t being used.

It's also important to be mindful and considerate of other passengers when using your phone - so take out your AirPods or headphones, dim the brightness of your screen and enjoy listening to your favourite songs and soundtracks.

Do different airlines have different rules on headphones?

Although the general rule is that headphones are given the green light when flying - it's always worth double-checking with your airline.

This is because different airlines have different policies and this includes rules on headphones.

Each airline will have their own policy on what type of headphones you can take on board and when you can and can't use them.
