Out of house and home…Airbnb moves beyond beds to sell tours led by locals
New brand Trips will offer day trips and longer experiences in 12 cities around the world. Themes are from pottery to boxing
In eight years, Airbnb have gone from couch-surfing upstarts to home rental powerhouse.
They’ve annoyed entire city governments and delighted millions of travellers with cheap and convenient digs. Despite all the tales of woe from disgruntled landlords and underwhelmed guests, one thing is certain: they are here to stay. Their latest venture certainly backs that up.
They’ve just announced ‘Trips’, which takes them closer to the traditional role of a travel agent, providing experiences and activities as well as accommodation.
Trips adds day trips and multi-day tours to their existing network of three million homes. From simple city walking tours to more in depth experiences, all will be led by local guides.
You don’t have to be staying in an Airbnb property to take part, just book through the website at or download the app from the same site.

They’re starting out with around 500 experiences in 12 cities worldwide, and they're inviting hosts in 39 others to list their own tours, so there should be something so suit your interests.
It’s too early to monitor the quality of the operation yet but we are intrigued enough to give it a go. Look out for a full review here early next year.
