HOLIDAY BREAKTHROUGH

Holiday hope for Brits as they may be able to use EU e-gates for passport checks to avoid huge queues

RISHI Sunak wants to strike a new Brexit deal to save Brits from passport queues in Europe.

Officials in the Foreign Office are looking to negotiate an agreement that would allow travellers to use EU e-gates at passport check points.

In some states Brits can already use the electronic gates - but many airports don't allow it, offering slow manual checks instead.

A new deal would speed up waiting times during peak holiday seasons, enabling families to get out of the airport quicker and down to the beach.

Officials think that now is the time for talks as the PM has worked hard to smooth over tensions with EU rulemakers.

The Windsor Framework, announced in February, was seen as a breakthrough moment for UK-EU relations.

The deal ended the so-called sausage wars that saw two years of border chaos over goods and trade in Northern Ireland.

reported that diplomats have begun informal conversations about passport checks with their European counterparts.

Mr Sunak is set to meet EU President Ursula von der Leyen at the G7 Summit in Japan next month.

A Downing Street spokesperson today said the PM's priority is to minimise border delays abroad.
