Spain weather warning as Brit tourist hotspots set to hit scorching 36C – see if your trip is affected

BRITISH holidaymakers heading to Spain have been warned as a popular tourist hotspot will today see temperatures of 36C.

Spain's weather agency AEMET has issued a yellow weather warning for heat in beachside destinations in the coastal region of Alicante.

The mercury is expected to reach 36C in some areas with the warning for heat being in place from 12pm local time (11am BST) till 8pm (7pm BST).

Some 14million Brits travel to the Alicante region every single year - with many flocking to Benidorm.

And those who have travelled to the resorts for the long bank holiday weekend will be looking to soak up the sun.

Alicante's weather comes as much of Northern Spain is facing alerts for rainfall and storms.

AEMET said that there will be "very high temperatures today, especially in the southern half [of Alicante]".

Despite the warning for the wider region however, Benidorm temperatures are forecast to hit highs of 25C.

AEMET added that the scorching heat is expected to continue throughout the weekend - with it not being expected to drop below 30C.

But at the start of May temperatures will drop back to the mid 20s in the popular resort towns.

Spain's emergency coordination centre tweeted: "Yellow level due to high temperatures (36C) on the south coast of Alicante."

It comes as this week the Valencian towns of Xàtiva and Carcaixent enjoyed temperatures of 36.2C.

Meanwhile, British holidaymakers gearing up to soak up the sun in Spain have been warned of a new smoking ban on some of the country's most popular beaches.

Tourists are barred from lighting up at 28 hotspots across Majorca, Ibiza and Menorca.

Tourists have also been warned that two popular  Costa del Sol beaches are set to be closed for months.

Authorities in Benalmádena, have announced that the beaches of Torrebermeja and Las Gaviotas are expected to remain closed till July due to improvement works.

And as summer is approaching, Brits should be aware they might face travel chaos as hundreds of flights could be affected.

Pilots working for Air Europa are staging a strike over ongoing labour disputes with union officials saying that the airline has "zero interest" in resolving the issues.

It is estimated that more than 16 million Brits flocked to sunny Spain last year, making it holidaymakers' top destination.
