MORE than half of Brits plan staycations this summer — to avoid the hassle of getting to sweltering destinations.

A third say flight delays and airport chaos make travelling a misery while the same proportion say they find it too hot when they finally get there.

Another third miss British food while a quarter get annoyed with fellow passengers.

And a poll shows many of those holidaying here plan to go beyond daily beach visits and get to know an area.

One in four are choosing staycations between April and June because of lower prices and less competition for reservations.

The survey, by Visit Cornwall, suggests that many Brits actually quite like our cooler weather.

Tourism manager Abi Steel said: “There has been a surge of interest in the likes of wildlife tours, learning-based experiences and activities which offer a chance to go behind the scenes.

“It’s all about wandering off the tourist trail to discover lesser-known spots and enjoy local food and drink.”

"It’s fantastic to hear that over half of Brits are looking to holiday in the UK this year and that they’re going beyond traditional beach activities to experience the true character of an area.

“Here in Cornwall, we’ve got some of the most spectacular coastline and countryside in the UK, if not the world, incredible hospitality and a ‘whatever the weather’ attitude – just remember, it’s the right clothing, not the wrong weather.
