Holiday warning for second popular European island – as TUI tells Brits not to travel

AIRLINES have been forced to issue another holiday warning after cancelling thousands of flights.

Huge wildfires forced 30,000 locals and tourists to evacuate parts of Rhodes in Greece.

As a result, Jet2, TUI and Thomas Cook were forced to cancel flights and holiday packages to the island.

However, thousands more have been evacuated in Corfu, after wildfires spread across the second Greek island.

Nearly 2,500 locals and tourists were evacuated overnight, according to local fire services, with many forced to board boats from Nissaki Beach.

A local SOS message was sent out reading: "If you are in Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia Perithia & Sinies, evacuate now to Kasiopi.

"Wildfire in your area - follow instructions of authorities."

Concerned Brits have taken to social media about their holidays to the island.

One person wrote: "We are due to set off on a TUI cruise leaving from Corfu on Friday. Can you let me know if this is likely to be cancelled."

Another tweeted: "Are flights scheduled to fly INTO Corfu still? Surely they’ll be cancelled now?"

TUI has warned: "If you're travelling to Corfu on 24/25 July and are staying at the TUI Blue Atlantica Nissaki Beach, Pantokrator, Golden Mare, La Riviera or Nautilusue then we advise not to travel to the airport.

"Other hotels are operating as normal."

EasyJet is yet to advise against travel but replied to concerned customers: "We are currently operating as normal to Corfu however we continue to closely monitor the situation closely.

"We advise customers travelling to and from Corfu to check the status of their flights on Flight Tracker."

Airlines are yet to confirm if they will be cancelling flights to the Greek island, although some have already been affected.

One woman tweeted: "My son was due to fly out to Corfu early this morning, he received a message late last night to say the hotel has been evacuated and holiday therefore cancelled and to look for new holiday or have refund."

The UK Foreign Office has since updated the travel advice for Greece.

The website states: "Extreme temperatures are affecting many areas of Greece and there are a number of active wildfires. If you are a British national affected by wildfires, please follow the guidance from the emergency services.

"Call the Greek Emergency Services on 112 if you are in immediate danger.

"In the first instance, please contact your airline or travel operator who can assist you with return travel to the UK."
