WHEN most people picture turquoise waters, they're usually off the coast of some tropical island holiday destination.

But there are some places in the UK where you can dive into glorious blue pools, without even heading to the coast.

One such place is the Wasdale Emerald Pool, described online as a "wild swimming paradise" set among stunning scenery in the Lake District.

The pool's name isn't entirely accurate, with pictures showing it to be much closer in colour to topaz than emerald green.

The striking blue waters stand out among their verdant backdrop, with the summit of England's tallest mountain Scafell Pike making the sight even more dramatic.

Small waterfalls constantly trickle elegantly into the pool, providing a gentle peaceful sound as well as fresh clean water in which you can swim.

One person who captured the scene in all its glory was Tiktok account UK Hidden Gems () who described it as "the best hidden gem in the lake district".

showed someone plunging into the clear blue water, among its amazing surroundings.

Their followers were suitably inspired by the footage, with one writing: "Omg, I want to go see this."

Another said: "That water looks class, we need to go there."

A third added: "That looks amazing."

They weren't the only people to have been amazed by the pool, with travel bloggers Cat Smith and Joe Bird () labelling it a paradise.

They wrote: "It really is a sensational spot and not just because of its incredible crystal clear water, but also the majestic setting.

"The pool is surrounded by the tallest mountains in England, yet nestled within craggy cliff walls, which give it a secluded feel.

"Proof that not all paradise locations involve white sand and palm trees."

The pools have been compared to ones found elsewhere in the UK, including on an island labelled "the most beautiful place in Britain".

The Isle of Skye came top of 's 50 Most Beautiful Places in the UK, with dolphins and whales often spotted swimming around its shoreline.

However, its fairy pools, found along the river Brittle, are also a huge draw for tourists.

The pools are full of clear blue water and are close to a number of cascading waterfalls at the foot of the Black Cuillin mountain ridge.

Although they are a peaceful place to appreciate nature today, the pools were the site of the last and bloodiest Battle of Coire na Creiche, between the MacLeods of Dunvegan and the MacDonalds of Sleat.

According to : "The MacDonalds were victorious, but it is said that the battle was so fierce and so many had been killed, that the fairy pools ran red with blood."
