UK airport reveals huge new £24million renovation – and it includes more flights

It is hoped the renovation will bring 'more resilient air links' to the island

A UK airport has submitted plans for a £24million renovation - with more flights promised if they are successfully passed.

The makeover will include extending Alderney airport's runway to allow larger planes to land and modernising the old 1960s terminal building and fire station.

The application has been submitted by infrastructure consultants Aecom on behalf of Guernsey Ports - who operate the airport.

It is hoped the longer runway will allow larger planes to fly in and out of Alderney, providing "more resilient air links" for the island.

The application requests permission to "reconstruct, lengthen and widen" the airport's runway and resurfacing its apron.

New approach lights and drainage will also be installed around the airfield.

Guernsey politicians agreed to the plans drawn up by Alderney airport in December 2022.

The States of Alderney have said an environmental assessment will be carried out before planning permission is granted.

It said this would be published once received.

The channel Island sits just 12 kilometres from the North West coast of Normandy and and 100 kilometres from the south coast of England.

It comes as Gatwick Airport revealed its multi-million pound renovation which is set to open to the public later this month.

The £250million upgrade started in 2020, due to concerns of overcrowding on the platforms.

This also led to congestion using the escalators - so any passengers running late for their flight would find themselves stuck in long queues to get to the terminal.

Eight new escalators, five new lifts and four new stairways have also been created along with new information screens.
