Retro Victorian seaside town loved by royals – with award-winning beach and multicoloured huts

Another lesser-known seaside town is set to become popular in 2024

THE UK isn't short of picturesque seaside towns, including one spot that has some royal fans.

While coastal locations in Cornwall and Devon attract thousands of Brit holidaymakers every year, the UK is home to plenty of other seaside spots that also deserve some attention.

One of those places is Frinton-on-Sea in Essex, which has an award-winning beach, colourful beach huts, and royal fans.

Despite being overlooked by most Brit holidaymakers, the seaside town used to be a popular holiday hotspot for certain royals and other high-profile celebs.

In the late 1920s and the 1930s, Frinton-on-Sea welcomed royal visitors like Prince Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.

Dubbed the "Royal Years", the former monarch is said to have stayed in a holiday home on Holland Road.

Prince Edward wasn't the only famous face to visit the town either, the former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill also went on holiday in Frinton.

Other famous visitors to the Essex town include Hollywood actor Douglas Fairbanks.

While the seaside town doesn't currently seem to attract the same kind of high-profile celebrities, there are still plenty of reasons to visit.

Earlier this year, Frinton Beach was awarded Blue Flag status, as well as names one of the best in the country by the Times in 2021.

Blue Flag beaches are awarded based on factors, such as accessibility, biodiversity, safety, and water quality.

Frinton Beach stretches for more than one mile, and it has multicoloured beach huts that holidaymakers can rent.

The Blue Flag beach has received positive reviews on TripAdvisor too, with a 4.5/5 star rating.

One person wrote: "What a lovely, clean beach, with soft, soft, sand and amenities nearby - plus, free parking!"

Another said: "One of the best beaches in the South East."

Free parking is available at the beach, although holidaymakers will need to pay 20p to use the public toilets.

Other tourist attractions in the seaside town include Frinton Golf Club and Frinton-on-Sea Cricket Club.

The Lock & Barrell is the town's first, and only, pub.

Set on Connaught Avenue, the pub first opened in 2000, and it now serves a selection of ales and other pub grub.

The pub is currently closed following a change of management, but will reopen soon.

If you're not of fan of pubs, then you'll be relieved to know that there are other dining options too.

One of those is Blue Naan (a curry house), and there's also Tracy's Cafe Bristo, which serves a range of hearty breakfasts.

Hotels in the seaside town are affordable too, with an overnight stay at a beachfront B&B starting from £45 per night per person.

There are plenty of other lesser-known seaside towns dotted around the UK too.

Littlestone-on-Sea in Kent is often overlooked by the nearby Folkestone, but it is set to open a trendy new hotel next year.

And Brean is expected to be popular in 2024, with an award-winning holiday park and one of the longest sandy beaches in Europe.
