Multi-million-pound leisure resort to transform former coal mine – with treehouses, spa complex and aquatic centre
It would also have an open-air theatre to host performers and entertainers
PLANS have been drawn up to transform a former-coal mine into a multi-million-pound wellness and therapy park in the UK.
The new attraction would have a spa and therapy centre, as well as new luxury lodges and treehouses in which people could stay.
The now disused opencast mine at St. Ninian’s in Fife, Scotland, would be transformed by the project that has been put forward by “community interest” company National Pride.
It is their hope that they will be able to transform the land at St Ninian’s into the eco retreat.
They say the ex-mine is “a beautiful natural place” for the park, which would provide a place for relaxation with a spa, exercise facilities, craft activities and amenities.
The plans they have submitted for the wellness complex also include geodesic domes, a trout fishery and aquatic centre, a technology park, an entertainment centre and parkland designed to boost mental and physical health.
National Pride say that the development would be particularly beneficial for those suffering from both cancer and heart disease.
The resort would also have open air theatres, created for live performances of local and travelling entertainers.
The aim would be to make the retreat both accessible and affordable for all, providing people a calming place to relax and recuperate, while also being “a premier venue” for leisure and tourism.
Its proposed location in Scotland plays a big role in the park’s identity, with natural beauty central to its ideas.
St Ninians Wellness has pledged that their guests will be “surrounded by the natural beauty of Scotland” to “experience contemplation, rejuvenation, improved physical health and mental wellness.”
Education and training opportunities, especially for vulnerable adults, would also be included on-site, with National Pride claiming it would create “significant employment” and support for local businesses.
Currently, the site is a brown-field patch of land, with artificial lakes and fields on top of where the mine used to be.
However, mock ups show the facilities and accommodation that National Pride would like to build on the space.
Irene Bisset, director of National Pride told : “We are very excited about the enormous potential of this astonishing site.
“As custodians, we take our responsibilities very seriously and our aim is to deliver an attractive, welcoming place for all.”
Eventually, the plan is for St Ninian’s to be one in a series of wellness centres “designed to meet an ever-increasing need for places close to nature for mental health and well-being”.
The plans have now been put to a public consultation before they can be given the green light.
After the consultation period, which is expected to last 12 weeks, the plans will be formally submitted.
National Pride have similar plans for another former coal mine in Ayrshire.
