From golfing fun to a country estate, see East Anglia without breaking the bank

FEW destinations in this part of England cater better to the family getaway than Great Yarmouth.

The resort town on the east coast couldn’t be more crammed with classic seaside attractions, from traditional arcade games and fairground fun to beachfront donkey rides.

If you’re looking to take advantage of those ocean views, Broadland Sands Holiday Park is well- positioned with holiday homes that look out over the sea.

Just a 20-minute drive from the hustle and bustle of Great Yarmouth, it is ideal for those who prefer a quieter space away from the crowds.

Parkdean Resorts’ Cherry Tree is a little closer to the action, although it still offers plenty of fun on site if you don’t fancy hopping in the car.

There’s an indoor and outdoor pool, an arcade brimming with games and a kids’ club.

And here’s what else there is for you to get stuck into . . .

FUN FOR UNDER A FIVER

ALL the best family seaside resorts have a Pleasure Beach and Great Yarmouth is no exception to the rule.

Entry is free for young ones, but if you’re happy to shell out a fiver you can book a Fun Card with unlimited entry and five credits towards rides (see ).

There’s whirling rollercoasters and waltzer rides as well as a 4D cinema and monorail for little ones.

CHEAP EATS & DRINKS

AFTER a day of rides and sandcastle building, swing by The Beach Hut Cafe, which as its name suggests, is a cute cafe by the sand.

It serves simple but delicious nosh for brekkie and lunch.

You’ll find salt beef bagels packed full and dripping in mustard for £6.90, as well as posh fish finger ciabattas filled with the cod classic, tartar sauce and salad for just over a fiver.

When you get thirsty, venture to Tombstone Brewery and Saloon Bar on Broad Row ().

It looks quite plain from the outside but inside, the decor has a funky industrial vibe.

Many of its ales are brewed in-house and therefore you’ll get a stonking good deal for a pint, plus it’ll likely taste a whole lot better than the mass-produced stuff.

BARGAIN BEACH DAYS

THE main beach has all you could ask for when it comes to a bargain day out.

During the summer months a traditional Punch and Judy puppet show takes place on the beach, and there’s also a promenade packed with activities flanking the sands.

Ride the big wheel for exceptional views of the sparkling sea and kids with ice creams below, or pop into the Wellington Pier where you’ll have access to all the arcade games.

Sea Life also sits a stone’s throw from the beach which has adult and toddler tickets for £16 ().

It has a huge underwater tunnel where you can observe the largest of the centre’s sea creatures, a penguin enclosure and a jellyfish world with multicoloured lights that enhance the experience.

AFFORDABLE ATTRACTIONS

FOR something a little more tranquil, Somerleyton Hall and Gardens is a 45-minute drive away and home to historic parkland.

There’s a colourful, walled garden packed with vibrant flowers, an arboretum that’s home to ancient trees and even a yew hedge maze that kids will love getting lost in.

A family ticket costs £28 for two adults and up to three children (see ).

For £12.50 per child and £16.50 per adult, animal lovers can spot a rare Sumatran tiger, snow leopards, gibbons, otters, alligators and tropical birds, among other animals at Thrigby Hall (thrigby hall.com/infoprices).

Near the village of Filby, eight miles outside Great Yarmouth, it has the Cockatoo Cafe, play areas with a 3D adventure maze and tree-top walkways.

FREE FOR ALL

REDWINGS is a sanctuary for horses and donkeys and it’s totally free to enter, although donations are, of course, welcomed.

It’s only a 15-minute drive from Broadland Sands Holiday Park and staff will reel off fun facts about the animals and the story behind each (see ).
