AN abandoned Costa del Sol theme park manned by two workers who were "told they can't leave" is set to reopen its doors.

Tivoli World in Benalmadena was forced to shut during the covid-19 pandemic.

Since then, the Spanish theme park has been frozen in time - with its owners filing for bankruptcy.

But thanks to a bizarre contractual loophole, all the park's employees stayed in their .

And to make matters stranger, they were not allowed to seek employment elsewhere.

As result, two workers decided to keep turning up every day – ensuring that the beloved park didn’t fall in disarray.

Now Benalmadena's mayor Juan Antonio Lara has vowed to seize the park from its owners and re-open it.

He said: "We’ve been working from minute one to provide solutions and finally achieve what we all want – for Tivoli World to reopen its doors.

"Our government team is working to ensure that Tivoli reopens its doors and does so, as it could not be any other way, as an amusement park."

Tivoli World is currently deserted - save for a pop-up market in its sprawling car park every weekend.

Deputy mayor Presi Aguilera said a foreign investment fund is mulling a bid for the theme park.

Aguilera said: "There is a foreign investor who is very interested.

"Benalmadena Council has contacted the owner to hold talks facilitating the takeover.

"None of us wants it to be used for anything other than an amusement park.

"This space must be non-residential, but it could have a hotel or be used for commercial activity.

" But it must be linked to the amusement park's opening."
