BAGGING a late summer bargain isn't always easy, but Brits could be set to nab a last-minute deal at two popular holiday destinations.

Both Turkey and Cyprus have long been popular destinations for UK holidaymakers thanks to their affordable prices.

However, recent price hikes in Turkey, because of skyrocketing inflation, have seen tourist numbers plummet, with a similar scenario also playing out in Cyprus.

In a bid to attract more holidaymakers from the UK and Europe, hotels in Turkey, with low occupancy rates, are slashing prices by up to 50 per cent.

According to local paper , the average cost of a four night stay has dropped from £1083 (46,000 Turkish lira) to £730 (31,000 Turkish lira).

This means there are plenty of last minute deals to be had, including a three-night, all-inclusive, stay for two the Kemer Hotel in Antalya, which has dropped to £296 (12,600 Turkish lira) from £423 (18,000 Turkish lira).

The Chief Advisor of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies, Hamit Kuk, revealed that high prices in July and August led to poor sales, leading to the huge discounts.

Meanwhile, Mehmet Isler, President of the Aegean Touristic Enterprises and Accommodations Association, added: "Tourism operators are cutting prices to pay salaries, utilities, and loans. Profit is no longer a priority; survival is."

A similar situation is happening in Cyprus where tourism bosses have reported a huge drop in the number of tourists heading to the island.

The island has seen 30,000 fewer tourists than anticipated, with Thanos Michaelides, the president of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association, adding: "The decline in hotel occupancy rates can be attributed to several factors.

"These include the ongoing Middle East crisis, the continued tension between Russia and Ukraine, a sluggish UK economy, the early occurrence of Catholic Easter in March, and a reduction in flights to Cyprus."

Why it's important to buy travel insurance when booking a holiday

The decline in tourism numbers has dealt a huge £30million blow to the country's economy too.

While the same drop in hotel prices hasn't been seen in Cyprus just yet, with fewer tourist flocking to the island, accommodation providers may also been forced to slash their rates too.

Other European destinations are set to be cheaper this summer compared to the same time last year, according to the travel search engine Kayak.

All prices are average prices for economy, return tickets.

It turns out that Istanbul came out on top, with the average cost of a return flight £278 this year, almost a quarter less than it was last summer.

It was one of several popular holiday destinations for Brits to be included among the 11 places on the list.
