Introducing Rome

Lovers of history, lovers of food and those simply in love have been coming to Rome for centuries. The most important city of the ancient world is still very visible in Rome’s astonishing archaeology and architecture. The modern world’s very present too, and Rome is one of the top designer shopping and fashion destinations in the world. Your itinerary is bound to include world-famous landmarks like the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s, but will also have time for unscheduled pit stops for perfect pasta and pizza or inspiring ice cream. The weather is Mediterranean, just a couple of hours’ flight from the UK. After a day’s sightseeing, sit back and admire the sunsets from a pavement café or head to some very trendy bars and clubs to party the night away.

Getting around

Rome’s city centre is divided into 22 wards, the outer parts of the city are divided into larger districts. In practice though, most people simply refer to the nearest big square or monument when giving directions. The city centre is compact and one of the most pedestrian friendly in Europe – you can see almost everything on foot very easily – in terms of its size if not in terms of local traffic customs.

Rome’s public transport is good and very good value. The underground Metro has three lines, but the A and B lines are enough to get you around the main sights. Overground you can travel by tram or bus, with local trains also included in an integrated transport system. A single journey ticket for bus, metro, tram or train is €1.50. Seven day passes are €24, day passes €7, 48-hours €12.50, and 72 hours €18. The Roma Pass, which is available online, gives free public transport as well as entry to many of the best museums and attractions. They are €36 for a three-day pass.
