Huge new £460million train station in the UK to be the first of its kind in 130 years

And the two other huge train station redevelopments planned for the UK

NEW designs have been put forward for a major new train station opening in the UK.

Birmingham's Curzon Street Station is to open as part of the HS2 rail network.

The huge new station will have seven platforms, and has been inspired by previous Victorian designs, shown by the curved roofs.

Outside will be four public spaces with gardens and a promenade.

Station Square will have a green area and be known as the "front door" of the station while Curzon Square will be the space for outdoor events.

Curzon Promenade will have cycle and walking paths that links the station to the Eastside City Park while Paternoster Place will have paths and "urban space";.

A tame line will also run by the station as well as underneath

The new Curzon Station will be the a UK-first, new station being built since the 19th century, with the last being London Marylebone in 1899.

Huw Edwards, stations executive director for HS2, said: "What is being built at Curzon is the first mainline terminus in a city centre for over 130 years."

Some of the latest designs include changing the roof materials, which have amended the plans since first revealed.

Works started back in January 2024, with the works for the building itself starting this year.

Testing will run from summer 2026 to autumn 2028.

The station hopes to be in operation by the mid 2030s, although guided tours of the current construction could be allowed before this.

When built, train journey's between London and Birmingham will take around 49 minutes.

Another huge train station is being built as part of HS2 as well.

The £2billion Old Oak Common hopes to open by 2029 and will be the most "connected station in the UK.

The 14-platform station will have high speed trains hitting speeds of 220mph with routes between London to Birmingham.

The first HS1 train initially launched in 2003, and connects London to Europe.

HS3 was a proposed rail route that would connect Liverpool to Warrington with high speed trains.

And a train line called HS4 had hoped to connect London Gatwick, London Heathrow and Manston Airport.

What is HS2?

HS2, which stands for High Speed 2, is a project that aims to create a high-speed rail network between London and major cities in the Midlands and Northern England.

It is the biggest rail investment ever made in the North of England and is Europe’s largest infrastructure project.

New trains will run on HS2 lines with a top speed of 225 miles per hour - the aim is to cut journey times and make it easier to travel across England.

Last year, then-PM Rishi Sunak decided to scrap the Birmingham to Manchester leg of the line.

It is now hoped that the train will run to Euston despite dears this route would also be scrapped.
