Where is Helmingham Hall and what features is it famous for?

Helmingham Hall is a medieval moated manor house in Helmingham, Suffolk.

The house - originally built by major landowner and estate manager John Tollemache - is a Grade 1 building on the National Heritage List for England.

Set around a courtyard, it is famed for its lush garden and deer park.

It's thought that the present Helmingham Hall may have been constructed in 1510 on the site of an earlier house called Creke Hall.

The house is surrounded by a 60ft-wide moat, which can only be crossed by two drawbridges that have been pulled up every night since 1510.

Queen Elizabeth I is said to have twice visited Helmingham - in 1561, and later for the christening of her godchild, Lionel Tollemache.

Treasures such as a medieval sword and an Indian jewel of "jaw-dropping value" are expected to be revealed at the house tonight.

The BBC's show description says: "The moated Tudor manor house, with two working drawbridges, is the perfect backdrop for a roadshow brimming with antique finds.

“Lee Young discovers a collection of 17th and 18th century decorative boxes that the owner is using as his pension fund.

“Militaria specialist Bill Harriman is intrigued by a medieval sword dredged up from a pond on a golf course, and Geoffrey Munn sees an Indian jewel, dating back to the Siege of Seringapatam in 1799, that carries a jaw-dropping value.”

Who is the Tollemache family?

The Tollemache family, also spelt Talmach or Tallemache, has resided at Helmingham Hall for centuries.

Initially based at Bentley, Suffolk, the family has had a significant impact on the economy  and politics of East Anglia since the reign of Edward I.

It's understood the Tollemaches were living in Suffolk before the Norman conquest of England.

They acquired the property by marriage in the 15th century.

Helmingham was divided on the death of childless Wilbraham Tollemache, sixth Earl of Dysart in 1821.

In the 1880s some of John Tollemache's sons started a brewery in Suffolk, which merged in 1957 to become the Tolly Cobbold brewery. Pubs called Tollemache Arms are located in and near the family's estates.

Presenter Fiona Bruce and her team also visited the property in 2017 as part of the show's special 40th anniversary series.

During that show, a vanity box from Donald Trump's former yacht, the Trump Princess, was given a valuation of up to £200.

A charity shop sold the box to Jeff evans for just five pounds in Cirencester, Gloucs, in 2005.
