We spoke to Jacob Tomsky, the author of Heads in Beds: A Reckless Memoir of Hotels, Hustles and So-Called Hospitality.

He worked in hospitality for ten years in every position from housekeeping to front desk, and knows a thing or two about what goes on behind the scenes there.

Jacob told Sun Online Travel that one of the grim realities of working in a hotel is that people will sometimes die there.

He said: “There could be a dead person in there. People die everywhere – they die in their sleep. There is a lot of death going on."

He continued: “There is also the sad reality that people come to hotels to end their lives because they would rather be found by a stranger.”

Another unexpected sight is that of people having sex – and they actually want you to see them.

Jacob said: “Some people want to expose themselves to strangers. Couples also want to get caught having sex.

“They will call down to reception and ask for something in order for you to walk in."

He added: “Every time you open the door as a housekeeping manager you never know what you’re going to find. You can really get the fear about walking into a room.”

Jacob also said that people behave like “children” when they are staying at a hotel.

He said: “You can imagine the sort of filth that people leave behind.

“A lot of blood, a lot of fecal matter, a lot of residue from sexual escapades. There’s also the remains of drug binges."

He continued: “People have disgusting habits and when they come to a hotel, for some reason, it’s like it’s the first time they’ve ever been away.

“People really treat hotel rooms in a much more disgusting way than they treat any other kind of room. It’s just refreshed by some faceless person. They don’t care how they leave it.”
