WINTER SAVER

January is the cheapest time of the year to go on holiday and you can save over £300 per week compared to August

There are some real bargains to be had during this time of the year and destinations are far less crowded

WITH Christmas on the way, you’re probably not thinking about spending money on a holiday in January.

But if you want to get the best travel deals, it’s actually the cheapest time of the year for overseas holidays – and there are savings to be had whether you’re looking for a short-haul city break or a beach break.

The Algarve offers some of the best deals around for January

According to TravelSupermarket, January is consistently the cheapest month to travel based on offers given by package holiday providers.

In some destinations, you could save hundreds of pounds.

For example, for the Algarve, the average price in January is £23.48 per person per night while in August, the average increases to £71.50 per person per night.

This means that if you were to book a seven night break, the difference in price would be over £300 for the week.

Travelling in January could also mean fewer crowds

Emma Coulthurst, travel commentator at the site, said: “People don’t think to go away so close after Christmas; low demand means fantastic prices at the start of the year and the lack of queues at the major attractions and the feeling of being one of the locals, rather than a tourist, make up for any cooler temperatures.”

If you don’t mind the weather, beach breaks offer the best deals by far.

According to Emma: “If you go to the Spanish mainland or the Algarve, you are less likely to get warm weather but it is a great time to get away for a change of scene, great value delicious food, walks by the sea and ridiculously good holiday package prices.”
