Discover Lake District’s incredible scenery, endless fun activities and pubs

I’M driving a speedboat across crystal-clear waters and the sun is shining. I could be in the Bahamas but I’m actually in Lake Windermere, during the hottest summer for decades.

As fans of staycations know all too well, the Great British weather is a fickle beast, so we lucked out during our five-night stay at the Parkdean Resort in White Cross Bay.

But with the incredible scenery, endless fun activities and gorgeous local pubs to rest our tired legs, even the worst weather would have struggled to dampen the Lake District’s charms.

We stayed in one of the park’s well-appointed lodges – with more than enough room for all the family.

A modern kitchen and lounge had everything we needed, including a TV bigger than our own at home, along with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Luxury, indeed.

The facilities at White Cross Bay are modern, well-staffed and cater for all ages.

If you are a fan of the great outdoors, the site is set on the bank of Lake Windermere, with a small beach less than a two-minute walk from the main entrance.

We spent hours there each evening – watching people feed the ducks, driving around on their boats and enjoying the stunning views across the water and over the hills.

Those brave enough to dip their toes in the lake will be mesmerised by the fish that come to nibble your toes.

You would pay good money for that in a fancy spa, said my partner, and he was right. My feet have never felt so smooth. And for free. Win.

Boats can be hired to take around the lake, and there are a number of on-site facilities perfect for children.

For great local treks, just ask the friendly staff at reception, who will sort you a map and help you plan a route. A daily rota of activities, including watersports and nature trails, are available for a small fee.

We tried out the Survival School – think Bear Grylls but more fun – which was fascinating and informative, with a brilliant ranger on hand to teach us things we had never heard of.

There is also a large play park and a fabulous indoor swimming pool – equipped with a Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. To use the pool facilities, you have to book a slot. It means the pool is never over-crowded and the time slots start early enough, and finish late enough, to work around everyone’s needs.

There is an on-site restaurant and bar, with friendly staff and tasty food.

Free entertainment for children is provided every night and the brilliant host had the kids amused for hours, with discos, quizzes and games.

For those keen to venture farther afield, Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside are all within walking distance. Adventurous types should head to Tree Top Trek, which is just five minutes away and well worth the price.

You feel like you are flying as you hurtle toward the lake on the 250-metre zip wire.

The nearby towns are all packed with quaint shops and great pubs and restaurants.

If you’re taking lunch with you, you’re spoilt for choice of where to park up and eat by the lake. If you’re dining out, there are a range of places, to suit any budget.

Taking a boat across the lake is a must. The best find of our break was Windermere Cruises, which offers an hour-long ride in an electric speed boat for £30.

For those who don’t fancy taking the wheel, the company also offer a number of packages – and most have a bar on board, so you can sip an ice- cold beer, or a hot coffee.

Using the ferry as a hop-on, hop-off service is also a great option and allows you to explore all the villages around the lake, while taking in the picture-perfect views.

Local attractions include The World of Beatrix Potter museum and Wray Castle, and they will not break the bank.

The charms of what is on your doorstep can often be forgotten when thinking about your next family break. But honestly, we have already booked to go back next year.

Let’s just hope the weather gets the memo.

The Lake District is fun for the whole family
