Mrs America viewers claims sexism drama should serve as warning to ‘woke hypocrites’ after explosive finale
MRS America viewers have claimed the sexism drama should serve as warning to ‘woke hypocrites’ after its explosive finale.
The BBC drama depicts the true story of the fight for equal rights for women in the 1970s.
Cate Blanchett plays the notorious and outspoken conservative Phyllis Schlafly, who led a backlash against the bid to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in the US.
And after watching the nine-part series reach a dramatic conclusion, some viewers think it should serve as a timely warning to 'woke hypocrites' in modern society.
One wrote on Twitter: "MrsAmerica #BBC2 right now …. Look and Learn #WOKE People :-(."
A second tweeted: "The complaints about mrs America from the extremely woke that the show is glossing over Schlafly’s racism is a frustrating example of how dangerous the insidious racism of the polite, upper-class, Christian right really is."
A third added: "This Mrs America diatribe may be my favorite
@therealjoebob rant - it’s the ultimate illustration of the hypocritical traps of an over eager woke America."
Meanwhile a fourth shared: "I really enjoyed “Mrs America.” I’m sure there are inaccuracies and certainly biased, but it artfully presents the way power (and desire for it) can corrupt, how people compartmentalize, and become hypocrites on all sides."
Viewers have been left appalled by scenes showing sexual abuse claims 'swept under the carpet' by feminists.
One particular scene in episode six, saw Bella Abzug (Margo Martindale), a social activist and leader of the Women's Movement, refuse to help Shirley Chisholm break the story of incidents of sexual abuse, where secretaries were being forced to perform sexual favours for the congressmen they worked for.
