The Walking Dead boss hints show will continue past end of comics – promising ‘there’s a lot more to go’

Lauren Cohan

THE Walking Dead looks to have a long, long future ahead - despite the comics the show is based upon drawing to a close.

The popular graphic novels by Robert Kirkman published their last issue last year, but according to former showrunner and chief content officer Scott Gimple, that won't constrain the AMC TV show.

Speaking to ComicBook.com the telly maestro inistsed that while the comics have guided the show, the team would be willing to continue beyond Kirkman's storylines.

"It's always been about fulfilling the spirit of the book [and] 2hen I read that last issue, I was like, 'I want to see more of this. I want to see more of this world that he's laying out,'" he explained.

"And Kirkman even was like, 'Hey, you see what I did there, see how much story is there, how about that?'" he continued.

Teasing a bevvy of new content, he added: "We want to fulfill the book, but even in fulfilling the book, I think there's a lot more to go."

The comments mark the second time that show bosses have spoken about plans for The Walking Dead in the long term.

Kirkman previously spoke about a time jump of several decades in reference to his final comic issue.

"I will say that there's a lot of implied story in the final issue, with the railroad meeting, and the colony to the West uniting with the colony to the East," he said during a Q&A live stream.

"There's some general thoughts and notions that I have for that - if the television show ever gets to that point in the comic book series, and we decide to continue past that point, I'm kind of excited about the idea of telling a little bit more with older Eugene and Judge Michonne and the different things that were in the comic series that could have gone on, and we could have done more with. So that could be kind of neat."
