The season five finale saw the team pulled apart and shipped away to different settlements run by Virginia's Pioneers, including a base in the town of Lawton in Southern state Oklahoma.

Elfman's character June was an ICU nurse before the apocalypse and her skill set makes her a valuable commodity as she finds herself working for Virginia, who may have dispatched group leader Morgan (Lennie James).

Jenna, 48, described the new season on the : "Dark. Dark, it's so dark!"

Commenting on the group's separation, the actress added: "there's not a lot of self-determinism on our part, we've seen what happens to people when they try to leave."

She added: "So what that separation and being under the pressure of Virginia does to each of us in our own way, and what is being run on us, what kind of experiences we're being forced to have.

"You have these strong characters that it's been established how capable they are, so they're allowed to do what Virginia wants them to do," Elfman said.

Jenna pointed the importance of her nursing experience to Virginia.

The AMC series will return for its sixth season in October, and fans have been given their first look at what they can expect.

Fans were also given a glimpse of Lennie James, who plays Morgan, however he was seen behind-the-camera rather than in front of it, meaning his fate still hangs in the balance as the only character to remain at Humbug's Gulch.

The characters new locations isn't the only change being made to season six, as the show adopts an anthology style approach to filming.

Executive producer Ian Goldberg recently explained the shift, saying: "We're going to have an anthology structure to the episodes, where we get to deep dive into exactly what these characters are going through within Virginia's communities, within the style of episodes we've done in the past that we've loved…
