GLOW fans have been left devastated as Netflix cancels season 4 after social distancing makes wrestling scenes impossible to film.

According to , The giant streaming platform has now made a U-turn on its decision to renew the series and has become the latest casualty of the coronavirus-related production shutdown.

Series creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch released an emotional statement which read: "COVID has killed actual humans. It’s a national tragedy and should be our focus. COVID also apparently took down our show.

"Netflix has decided not to finish filming the final season of GLOW. We were handed the creative freedom to make a complicated comedy about women and tell their stories. And wrestle. And now that’s gone.

"There’s a lot of sh*tty things happening in the world that are much bigger than this right now. But it still sucks that we don’t get to see these 15 women in a frame together again.”

The pair ended the statement with high praise for their cast, adding: "We’ll miss our cast of weirdo clowns and our heroic crew. It was the best job."

Gutted fans made their feelings known on Twitter as one wrote angrily: "GLOW was cancelled and I am FURIOUS. #GLOW."

Another viewer added: "Rude #netflix. Just rude. #glow is a great show and you had to go and cancel it. Thanks for making #2020 stay true to it's brand."

This emotional user posted: "Netflix cancelled GLOW. My blood is boiling..... Also crying a bit #GLOW@netflix@GlowNetflix."

While the fourth viewer wrote: "#GLOW is my favourite show. It has everything. Every season got better and better. The cinematography was perfection. I loved all the girls so much, their stories and their style, and now I will never know if they succeed. I am so devastated this story will have no ending."

GLOW was three weeks into filming the new series and had completed one episode and started on a second when when production was delayed in mid-March due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Physical contact, heavy breathing and exertion are synonymous with professional wrestling, but in coronavirus restrictions in place, these things should be avoided.

That on top of covering additional COVID-related costs for its large cast of 20, it meant that the series was unable to continue. However, all of the series regulars have been paid for Season 4 in full.

A Netflix spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline: "We’ve made the difficult decision not to do a fourth season of GLOW due to COVID, which makes shooting this physically intimate show with its large ensemble cast especially challenging.

"We are so grateful to creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, Jenji Kohan and all the writers, cast and crew for sharing this story about the incredible women of GLOW with us and the world."
