The highly anticipated second series kicked off on Sunday and had fans struggling to keep their emotions in check.

The BBC One fantasy drama based on the novels by Phillip Pullman saw Lyra (Dafne Keen) arrive in a brand new world, having traversed the rift created by her father Lord Asriel (James McAvoy).

In the largely uninhabited new world named Cittàgazze, Lyra meets Will Parry (Amir Wilson) and they strike up a fast friendship.

One avid viewer wrote on Twitter: "Eleven years waiting for this… I'm crying… This feels like a dream #HisDarkMaterials".

"I’M 😭 NOT 😭 CRYING 😭," wailed one watcher on social media.

Referencing the ups and down of their relationship as depicted in Pullman's books, one fan added: "I feel like crying already as I'm happy it's back, but sad as I know how it ends #HisDarkMaterials #NewWorldsAwait".

"I didn't expect to cry for #HisDarkMaterials and yet here I am with my heart broken," said one viewer surprised by their reaction to the onscreen action.

The first episode of the returning series saw Lyra and Will clash with a girl called Angelica (Bella Ramsey) and her crew after spotting them chasing down a stray cat in the street, with Pan baring his fangs to scare them off.

It's questioned whether the children simply being cruel, or did they have good reason to be afraid?

They seemed to hint at the latter after cryptically warning the pair that they didn't know what they had been dealing with.

Game of Thrones fans were quick to point out that Angelica was being played by Bella Ramsey, who starred as the formidable Lady Mormont in the HBO epic.

"The moment you realise that Lyanna Mormont, badass Lady of Bear Island, has been resurrected in His Dark Materials," said one.

"Now that I know the child mob is being led by lady Mormont I’m a bit worried about Lyra and Will's survival," a third joked.

His Dark Materials airs Sundays on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
