The presenters have found themselves on opposing sides in a debate over July 19's restrictions lifting, with Susanna believing it's "too much too fast" and Richard arguing "if not now, when?"

He insisted it was time for the government to stop telling people what to do and trust them to use their common sense to protect others.

"I feel very wary about the fact we're getting rid of masks," Susanna argued back this morning.

"Richard, the point about masks is you don't wear them for yourself, you wear them for someone else.

"If I'm concerned about masks and you're not and we're in the same shop for instance, and you're not bothered, I'm wearing a mask and not getting protection. Whereas you're not wearing a mask and I'm not getting protected."

Richard explained: "Until I sense people out there are comfortable getting back to a maskless society I will wear my mask because I totally accept it's good manners not to spook people."

Susanna added: "That's very community-minded of you, but there will be plenty of people who won't wear a mask. I've already seen a lack of compliance and it's still a requirement.

"My parents are in their 80s and I want to know when they go out there are people concerned enough about their health and their vulnerability that they'll continue wearing masks on public transport and shops."

Interrupting her, Richard said: "That's Boris's point - it's up to us to take that responsibility ourselves."

But adamant Susanna hit back: "No, it's not up to my parents what other people do.

"It's alright if my parents wear masks but the point is you want other people to wear them."

Dr Hilary - who squabbled with Richard on yesterday's programme about mask-wearing - took Susanna's side once again.

He even went as far to say: "We're putting far too much faith in vaccinations."

Later, after their row, Susanna insisted: "It's a healthy debate, by the way, not people ganging up."

Richard later reassured viewers: "We're still friends, aren't we?"

Susanna said: "Of course, I never fall out with people on this show."
