Is The Larkins based on a book?
The Darling Buds of May is a novel by British writer H. E. Bates that was published back in 1958.
It was the first of a series of five books about the Larkins, a rural family from Kent.

"And summer's lease hath all too short a date."
How is The Larkins different to The Darling Buds of May?
Writer Simon Nye previously spoke of how The Larkins wouldn't be totally faithful to the original source material - Bates' novel The Darling Buds Of May.

But in season one, there were certain stories added that weren't in the book, unlike the original 90s show which stayed true to the source.

Wife Ma is still played by Bafta nominated actress Joanna Scanlan, who has appeared in The Thick of it, Puppy Love and No Offence.
Daughter Mariette is is now played by Joelle Rae, who replaces Bridgerton star Sabrina Bartlett who quit the show after a "disagreement".
